Bipolar Bear is a project to share my own coping strategies for living (sometimes successfully) with Bipolar.

Bipolar disorder is a mood condition marked by significant swings between periods of elevated energy and mood—known as mania or hypomania—and episodes of low mood, fatigue, and loss of interest, called depression. These shifts aren’t merely “feeling happy” or “feeling sad”; they can involve dramatic changes in thinking, behavior, sleep patterns, and daily functioning. During manic phases, a person might feel unusually confident, talk rapidly, take on risky projects, or need very little sleep, while depressive phases can bring profound sadness, difficulty concentrating, and a lack of motivation. The disorder typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood, and its exact cause is a blend of genetic predisposition, brain chemistry, and environmental stressors.

Managing bipolar disorder usually requires a combination of medication, psychotherapy, and lifestyle adjustments. Mood‑stabilizing drugs such as lithium, anticonvulsants, or atypical antipsychotics help smooth out extreme highs and lows, while therapies like cognitive‑behavioral therapy (CBT) or interpersonal‑social rhythm therapy teach coping skills, routine building, and stress reduction. Early diagnosis and consistent treatment are crucial, as they lower the risk of severe episodes, improve overall quality of life, and enable individuals to pursue personal, academic, or professional goals with greater stability. Understanding bipolar disorder as a medical condition—not a character flaw—helps reduce stigma and encourages supportive environments for those living with it.
